Kindergarten Listening Cues
Lesson A, Attentive Al, is an important Powerful You PRIMARY story to share with kindergarten students at the beginning of the year. The five interactive listening cues encourage students to get ready to learn. Create a habit by using these tips before every social emotional lesson. Slow these movements down so YOU can reap the benefits of stretching YOUR body in the middle of the day! Children feel proud to memorize the five listening cues and work hard to follow them. The simple listening movement cues to say out loud with your students are:
I keep my eyes on the teacher. Point to your eyes with your elbows lifted to shoulder level. Pull your upper arms back to encourages strong posture.
I keep my body still. Hug yourself with your elbows lifted to chin level to stretch your upper back.
I have listening ears. Rub your earlobes and reduce stress by stimulating certain pressure points on the ear.
I raise my hand when I have a question. Reach one hand above your head and then the other to stretch the sides of your body.
I never give up! Say this with enthusiasm as you pump your fist. A smile always helps, too.

Allow students to hold the laminated Powerful You Primary Educator Card and role-play this skill together. Let them act out what non-listening might look like, as well. Magnify their acting skills by using a movie film clap board or just say, “Lights, camera, action!” They love to pretend to be a movie star and role-play what a good listener might look like.
